THE ABSOLUTE 'PRIDE" OF Redondo Beach California , Hagins says that in that Drug / alcohol infested surfer town, he is like the local "Only man from around here who ever met ANDY GRIFFITH"; " I used to write about ,.. how much I hate all the people there but suddenly now,.. they all seem to love ME to death ( Laughs )" Says Hagins. "They seem to buy up all my shit ,..I guess I have to be kinder now" ( Laughs ),..
G.E SONGS ARE OFTEN QUIRKY, loaded with confusing contradictions, etc,..and they never really "settle in" to finding one sound,..
"22nd Street" however, seems to be one song in Hagins' vast collection of indie music tracks that he says he can hang his hat on ,.. as a BONAFIDE CLASSIC ! "WHEN you listen to 22nd, ..you're pretty much listening to G.e at their very best" Says Hagins "Hagins and bassist RICK "TED" CARMODY wrote the track together in early 1991; "More like 1990, soon after Flipper left the band" ( Guitarist PHIL KEEGAN ),.. Says Hagins.
THE SONG which starts off with one of rock's most iconic guitar effects laiden "intros" was written for THE ROCK OPERA 'WHITE SUBURBAN LIARS" which was originally a "Quadruple" CD with more than 64 Songs "We had a glut of new material but no money to record them ,..and no record label to help us so Me and Ted had to cut the whole album down to just 8 songs ( Laughs ) ,..very sad how much great material was lost ,.. "
One track that survived the huge 1991 purge was WHITE BLACK THANG ,..AS HAGINS worked to develop this whole new sound and "Bigger" direction for G.e ,.. "22nd Street sounds nothing like "White Black" but the concepts were connected" Says Hagins,.. "It was the story of this U.s Soldier returning home from the War in Iraq and how he was treated ,..ya know like 1990, 91,.. as it related to my life ,.. it was agonizing trying to get the concept up off the ground ,..very complicated shit ,..I don't think Ted EVER understood it." Hagins says that "22nd Street" was written with some kind of inspiration "about a girl" from Torrance that Hagins quite fancied "And she moved over to 22nd Street in San Pedro" says Hagins ,.."I remember about like 1987 ,..I kept drivin' over there lookin' for the chicks house,.. very much a weird stalker n' shit ,.. when one day, I SUDDENLY SAW THE CHICKS CAR PARKED NEAR MY HOUSE !!" ???
THE DARK THEMED TRACK soars along majestically as one of G.e's all time Greatest ! And Hagins says it is a song like no other GREENHOUSE EFFECT IDEA; "A LITTLE BIT of The Cure, David Bowie, Bauhaus, New Model army, Joy Division,.. this song really takes you on a wild 1980's emo rock ride" exclaims Hagins. "Almost sounds like some U2 kid masturbating to the Breakfast Club."
Hagins says in the track, you can feel his troubled childhood emerging ,..a theme that runs through much of G.e. ,.. "People read the blogs extensively and they see and know how fucked up I am but then they realize,..in many ways ,..they are as fucked up as me ,....AND THAT'S SCARY !" Says Hagins with a laugh ,.. "I mean people have to be pretty bored to sit all night long and watch G.e. ,..but maybe my shit really is 'THAT GOOD" says Hagins,...
Hagins says the goal is to "get people reading,..listening to the tunes,..and traveling down California memory lane",.... "They love G.e. everywhere,..we are a WORLD WIDE THING ,..NOT JUST CALIFORNIA AND SEATTLE and Oh Canada ,..Laughs" Says Hagins.
